A Change of Plans to the Beach

What does one do when your boat springs a leak to end the planned kayak trip?  You continue down the road to Port Aransas on this beautiful blue sky day.  Just a few miles away, it will also involve a 30-minute wait in line for the 5-minute ferry ride across the bay to the island.

Port Aransas has miles of great beaches, and it didn't take us long to find one.  We rolled up our kayaking pants and hit the beach.

After a mile or two of beach-combing, we took this picture of our favorite shells.  We consider these tiny works of art another of God's many wonders. Our collection would include a pinwheel and a sand dollar, and in celebration of our kayaking accident--a sharp piece of an oyster as well.

Just in case we would think our day had been tough, we had to feel worse for the person that etched this question in the sand, especially if that answer was real.

Right next to the beach is a deep water channel that is the only way for large ships to get into the Corpus Christi Port.  This large ship has sailed many miles from its home port in New Zealand.

We had been watching several surfers as they tried their luck with the waves on this wonderful weather January afternoon.  The crowds of surfers grew larger as soon as school was out and the kids had time to throw on wet suits and grab their boards.  We also noticed a few adults must have taken off work a little early today as they hurried into the waves.

It was a good day of beach cruising and binocular surf-watching.  It wasn't the activity we had planned, but it was still a very good day.

We couldn't spend the day at a beach town without eating some sea food.  Tonight we feasted on enchiladas and avocado with grilled fish.  It was a nice combination that we had never experienced before.  Our stomachs and hearts were full as we got in a much shorter line for our return ferry boat ride to the mainland.

It wasn't the day we had planned, but we were still blessed with a very good time as we watched the silhouette of the island palm trees against the setting sun.  Life is good!
