We're heading further east across New Mexico, making some short stops. Our plan is to be back in Oklahoma the week before Thanksgiving. We find when we get closer to the area where we lived all our life, it's harder to find things that we haven't already seen. So instead of driving straight down the much-used I-40, we're trying a smaller highway. We are heading east on Highway 60.
Our first stop is at Kiva RV Park and Horse Hotel. Doesn't that sound like the animals have more luxurious accommodations than the humans? Actually, we have a lovely full-hook-up site for the half-price Passport America rate. There's not much to do out here in the middle of no where, so we took a walk down the lonely highway beside the park. Sometimes we don't have access to a trail with a grand view to get some exercise. We're in the middle of a desert with lots of sand and sage brush, and we have long shadows at this time of the evening.
The half price rate is only good for two nights, but we wouldn't have stayed longer anyway. The national wildlife refuge down the road was closed, and we had to drive 30 miles to find a church on Sunday. It really is in the middle of no where!
The only point of interest we found was the Rio Grande River, that flows about two miles from our campground. Even before we saw the water, we knew where the river was from the line of cottonwoods that line its banks. They are quite a contrast to the sagebrush and junipers in the desert sand around our RV park.
Those cottonwoods are turning a beautiful gold, highlighted by the clear blue skies we are enjoying. We have had delightful fall weather here in the middle of no where, wishing for an awesome hike or a grand vista where we could enjoy it.
But with no place to explore, we spent most of our time at the RV park. We were still carrying around the little pumpkin we had purchased in Utah. It's about the size of a softball, and it was time to turn it into a jack-o-lantern.
Denisa rearranged the bathroom cabinets and Mark did research for the new tires we need for the car. Sometimes our stops aren't glamorous as we wander looking for wonders out here in the middle of no where.
