When Things Go Wrong . . .

This life on the road is filled with lots of fun adventures, and we are loving it.  But some times things go wrong even when we are on perpetual vacation.  We had that experience at our next stop.

Many times we don't decide where we are moving to until it is time to actually move.  But this time we knew that we were heading to Goose Island State Park in advance, so Denisa called to make sure there was room for an extended stay there.  The ranger assured us that no reservations were necessary in January.  But the afternoon before we headed that way, she called again to be sure. Again we were assured that it would be no problem for a long stay in our preferred part of the park.  So we were very surprised to get the news that all their spots in the woods were reserved for the weekend when we arrived.  What?  We could stay for two days, but they would probably have to kick us out when the weekend crowd arrived.  They explained that all those reservations happened that morning.  So it looks like we were going to be homeless for the MLK holiday weekend.  Things were beginning to go wrong . . .

We pulled into our site and set up camp like usual, even though we would probably be staying only two days here.  It was a great site in the woods with a nice private shaded spot.

Everything leveled and the two big slides went out.  Then the second thing went wrong.  The smallest slide in the bedroom started coming out crooked and then stopped.  This had never happened before.  The good news is that it's our smallest slide and won't affect our comfort much.  The other good news is that it did go all the way back in.

The bad news is that we won't be able to do laundry until that slide is fixed.  So now the second thing had gone wrong . . .

We settled into our spot and like the area very much.  Denisa has been looking forward to getting our kayak out into the ocean since we planned to go this direction.

She found a wonderful paddling trail that heads into the bay, complete with markers and a map to keep us from getting lost.  As we were inflating our trusty Sea Eagle kayak we even saw two dolphins playing in the water in front of us.  Denisa was a little distracted with getting everything ready after she spotted those dolphins.  We were so excited about kayaking with the dolphins and other sea creatures!

We rowed across the deep channel and headed into the maze of mangroves and grasses.  This was an adventure that we had been looking forward to for a while, and we were greeted by a snowy egret as we got started.

We were looking around enjoying our surroundings, when we heard a sound that we never want to hear again.  It was the low hiss of air escaping from our inflatable kayak.  While we were gawking around, we had floated over an oyster bed with its razor sharp shells.  We immediately saw that we were losing air in the bottom section of the boat and started our mad paddle back to shore.  No more pictures, but we have now learned that oyster beds and inflatable kayaks aren't a good combination.  Obviously another thing had gone terribly wrong!

Things seem to happen in threes, and we feel like we have now gotten our third strike.  So once again, we're ready to let the good times roll!

  1. Some times just have to throw up the hands and go along with the flow. Although I don't know it you want to do that with a leaky kayak.
