A Trip Back to Home and Family

If you know us well, you know that we became grandparents for the first time several months ago. We weren't sure how we were going to balance our life of full-time travel and grandparenting, but we have developed a plan. We're going to take a little vacation from all our vacationing.

Our circle through Minnesota and Michigan started about two months ago, and now it feels like it is time for another baby-fix. So we settled the motor home into a campsite near Traverse City, Michigan. The owner of the campground lives on-site and he agreed to keep an eye on our home while we head south in our car for some family time.

We are used to spending a month in a state before moving to the next. But during this drive, we were seeing a new sign in our windshield every few hours. We drove right into Indiana . . .

and then Illinois . . .

and finally into Missouri. We're heading to Kansas City, Missouri--on the other side of the state.

It's a 13-hour drive from Traverse City, Michigan, to Kansas City. That's where baby Carter Lynn was waiting from her Gram and Granddad. We think she's the cutest thing ever!

Our son and his wife were also waiting for us, but they aren't twice as old as when we saw them last. We stayed around Kansas City for the first two month's of Carter's life, and now she is almost four months old.

Carter's Mom and Dad have been doing a great job, and it was so fun to see this little family in action.

We settled into the guest room, as we're going to do some baby-sitting while Mom and Dad are working. It's a tough job, but someone has to do it! We had books to read . . .

naps to cuddle through . . .

stroller walks to take . . .

and songs to sing to a captive audience. It was great to spend good quality time with our granddaughter!

Our other son and his wife drove up from Oklahoma City, so we got to see all of our children at the same time. The newlyweds said they came to see us, but we're pretty sure that they might have been more interested in Carter.

We did some sight-seeing in downtown Kansas City, knowing that things are trickier with a little person in our group. We were at a restaurant downtown, taking a picture of the new little family. If you look in the upper-left corner of the picture, you can see the reflection in the mirror of the rest of our family snapping pictures like we were the paparazzi.

We rode the free trolley that shuttles people up and down the main drag of downtown Kansas City. We were all a little warm as we waited in temperatures that were nearing 100 degrees. After our summer in the north, we are not conditioned to this kind of heat!

We also played on the rental scooters that recently arrived in Kansas City. New in cities all over the country, these little electric scooters can be picked up and dropped off anywhere in town. They are unlocked via an app on your phone, and are surprisingly fast. (Hey wait a minute--how did we take a picture without Carter in it?!?)

It was such an awesome time to have all of our children together! It was worth that 13-hour drive to be here with them! We went to church together on Sunday morning, then we all headed our separate ways in the afternoon.

It was hard to leave all that cuteness, but we'll be back in a few days. We have some more driving to do, as we continue our trip to see more family members during this vacation from our vacation.

  1. Carter is absolutely adorable and I love the photo of her asleep on Mark's chest. The wonderful relationships that exists between you, your sons and your daughters-in-law are quite evident and a pleasure to see. Enjoy your family visits!
