We weren't in any hurry to leave our full-hook-up spot at Bentsen Grove Resort, as our destination on our first day was less than three hours down the road, and has no hook-ups. But we still have the palm trees in our posh parking spot this evening.
Since we have explored most of the towns in the Rio Grande Valley, we're only making a one-night stop in Alice, Texas, thanks to the hospitality of the folks at Walmart. We were joined here by three other RVs, and it gave us an opportunity to exercise our generator that hasn't been used for the last two months.
In gratitude for the free night's lodging, we also did some shopping to fill our refrigerator with supplies. Then we were on the road again! Traveling in Texas during the spring is a pleasure, thanks to the wildflowers that grow along the highways! President Johnson's wife, Lady Bird Johnson, was instrumental in making this state known for its beauty in the spring. We passed by fields of yellow . . .
and fields of orange as the daisies and paintbrushes are in bloom here in Hill Country.
Our destination today is Canyon Lake, Texas. We found that the Corp of Engineer park on the lake is already full for the weekend, so we landed at Lake Pointe RV Resort just down the road. This is a Passport America park, so we enjoyed the half-price rate that is even allowed on the weekend here. We would never stay here for the regular $62 rate, and the half-price $31 is still well above our average. But on this unusually warm weekend, it was nice to have two swimming pools and a lake to cool off in. The adult pool is on the right, while the Olympic-sized family pool is on a lower tier on the left. From here we can also see Canyon Lake at the bottom of our hill.
Canyon Lake lies between San Antonio and Austin, so it is a well-used recreation area. We took the campground walk down to the water to check out our new home town lake.
With stone edges, the water in the lake is clear, reflecting the puffy white clouds on this calm afternoon.
Even though we are very close to the little town of Hancock, it feels like we are far away in the woods. The deer would come to visit our camp site every day.
You know to expect wildlife visitors when you see they are selling deer corn in the registration office at the park.
Our next door neighbor winters here, so she is very practiced at feeding this herd. She buys her corn in the large bags downtown instead of the tiny ones in the office.
While we were outside watching the deer, a huge flock of pelicans flew directly overhead and circled to the lake.
We had been told about the pretty sunsets over the lake, and we headed down the trail again to witness it for ourselves the first evening.
Even though it took some time after the sun dipped below the horizon, we finally got to see the shades of pink that Denisa swoons over.
I think we're going to like it here at Canyon Lake!
