Finishing 1,200 Miles on Highway 50 and then a Week of Family Time

We're on the last leg of our trip across the country. We started on Highway 50 in California, and we have followed that road all the way across Nevada, Utah, and Colorado. Now we are stopping on Highway 50 to buy some watermelons and cantaloupes at Rocky Ford, Colorado. Famous for their summer melons, this road has many produce stands to choose from.

We stopped in at Knapp's Farm Market, where we bought two watermelons and five cantaloupes. Before she did her shopping, Denisa had to admire the field of zinnias right beside the farm stand.

We stopped at yet another farm stand before we finally had enough. Our motor home soon smelled like one giant cantaloupe! We are definitely in farm country, as we saw the last of the fall fruits and vegetables coming into market. This was a truckload of onions, fanning the skins along Highway 50. We crossed another state line into Kansas, but this flat lonely road had lulled Denisa to sleep so she forgot to take a picture. We finally departed Highway 50 at Syracuse, Kansas. We had followed this highway over 1,200 miles since we joined it in Lake Tahoe, California.

We wandered through Kansas, not stopping because there is not much to stop for in western Kansas. Denisa was alert as we crossed the Oklahoma state line. We can also see that the asphalt changes color in Oklahoma.

Shortly, we were parking our motor home for a three-day stay in the Oklahoma panhandle to see our mothers. Our mothers live only 15 miles apart, so we got to spend time with both of them, and some of Mark's siblings. It may be interesting that we didn't take any pictures of family members, but we did take a picture of their fowl. This has been a record year for grasshoppers, so they purchased guineas to gobble them up. Sure enough, the fenced yard of Mark's brother and sister-in-law's house was completely grasshopper-free now and Cindy's flowers look great! But we took this picture of the birds sitting on a nest they have formed among those flowers.

If we look closer, we can see that there are three guineas sitting on an over-sized nest that has too many eggs for them to cover. All that grasshopper-gobbling has led to excessive egg production! We're hoping to see baby guineas soon!

After half-a-week of family time in Oklahoma, we are heading across Kansas. We're glad to see that American patriotism is alive and well in the Midwest. We honked as we drove under this overpass decked out in red, white, and blue.

The reason for this drive is to get to our son's house near Kansas City. We haven't seen our newest grandchild in about three months. Eli has changed into a laughing toddler since our last visit.

We saw our granddaughter in Lake Tahoe a few weeks ago, but it warms our heart that she was so excited to see us. We only have one picture, because she really doesn't like us to take pictures. She says, "No photos please" and sometimes we even try to honor that request.

Her and her mother and Gram made a batch of home-made macarons while we were visiting. No pictures of the process, but this is the final product.

We have more picture of Eli, who can't tell us he would prefer we didn't take any pictures.

Even though we're not hiking in the mountains, we did manage to get some exercise while we were visiting. We took some walks, and went on a bike ride.

That is one cute biker!

After four days in Kansas, it was time to make our last family stop. We drove to northeast Oklahoma, where we spent the night at Mark's brother and sister-in-law's house. Is it crazy that the only picture there was of the hummingbirds that are hovering around their feeders? Denisa is better at remembering to take pictures of birds rather people this week.

The other thing we had to take care of this week, was to get a Covid test. This was new to us, as it was a saliva test, rather than a nose swab. It might be a little ironic that the plastic piece used for the sampling was made in China. We had to have this test because after this week of family time, we're taking a little trip that requires a negative Covid test to get on the airplane. Join us next time to see where that airplane is taking us.
