Life in the Dorm

The transition from a 4 bedroom/3 bathroom house to a 1 bedroom/1 bathroom apartment is a great step in getting used to a simpler life in a motorhome.  We find we can clean house in a fraction of the time, and we love the freedom from yard work!  We can leave our front door and be sitting at our desks at work in 3 minutes.  There are many times that our vehicles sit idle for days at a time!

The main downside to our move has to be the noise level.  We live next door to the boiler room that heats and cools the seven story tower above us.  This provides a lot of interesting noises that are hard to describe.  But it is also a layer of "white noise" to mask the day-to-day lobby noise.

Right outside our front door is a lobby that has a ping pong table, couches, big screen television, elevator and stairwell for the dorm residents.  We would never consider asking them to quiet down, but it took some time to get used to the noise.

Living in a single residence house, the sound of voices right outside your bedroom would be reason to call the police.  But now it is a daily (and nightly) occurrence.  The cheers from a competitive ping pong match, or the revelry from a long night of partying are only insulated by a thin row of bricks and can occur at 3 a.m. or 3 p.m.  Denisa slept with ear plugs at first, but she eventually learned to sleep through the lobby noise.  It should be good training for those campgrounds that grow noisier on the weekend, or are situated along train tracks!
