One of the things we look forward to in the motorhome
lifestyle is traveling lots of places without having to pack a suitcase. Having everything you own with you on this
ultimate “vacation” means you’ll never have to worry about forgetting your
umbrella or arriving with mismatched shoes.
But we found out that the ultimate packing job is moving into an RV.
We originally thought we would hit the road the day after we
retired, but there was too much work and socializing to get packed. So we settled for one week later, only to
find that we would be rushed even to finish packing in seven days. After paring things down for a year, we still
worried if everything would fit. And we
found that one disadvantage to retiring in January is that the packing process
involved wearing coats and gloves.
We loaded up our car, and then drove each load to the
motorhome storage facility. It was a
little scary how many trips it took, and with each load it was more difficult
to find places in the motorhome for our things.
As the week progressed, we were throwing away more and being less and
less sentimental about what we had to keep.
On the last day we came to the moment of reckoning—we took
the fully loaded motorhome to the CAT scales to see if we were overloaded. With all the compartments full, we held our
breath and thought “skinny thoughts.”
Whew! We weighed in at a lean
26,920 pounds. That’s 9,140 pounds on
the front axle and 17,780 pounds on the rear axle—both within their safe
ranges.
Mark looked up the appropriate tire pressure for our
Michelin tires (which are almost as tall as Denisa) and Installed the tire
monitoring system. We are ready to roll!
