Our son, Luke, will
start his residency in Pediatrics at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City,
Missouri on June 17. So we spent a good
chunk of our time away from the motor home helping him and his wife make the move to their first home. With his motor home driving experience, Mark was the
designated moving truck driver, and we had a full load.
We spent four nights in their home, mostly sleeping on mattresses in the living areas since we were painting the three bedrooms that were upstairs. It was like a long slumber party with Luke and Jordan hosting both sets of parents. We got to know our new daughter-in-law’s parents well as we finished projects all over the house together. It’s a 92-year-old house with a huge 92-year-old tree in the front yard.
It’s on a city street with more of those massive trees canopying the road. We couldn’t help but notice that all of these historic homes had front porches, and there was a good sense of neighborhood as many families spent time outside.
While we were there, we completed more projects than most home owners would conquer in a year's time. One of the first was the installation of a french drain to move the extra water that was accumulating in their back yard. We were under flash flood warnings most of the time we were in Kansas City, so the digging crew was a little muddy during this project.
We also installed a new front door, put in
new larger bolts to anchor the back deck, cleaned out all the cabinets and closets, painted three bed rooms (with
four layers of paints in each), planted flower beds and pots, installed two new
ceiling fans, hung a bathroom mirror, removed two dead tree stumps, tiled a
bathroom window sill . . . The list goes
on and on, but we also managed to unload and put away most of the contents of a moving truck,
trailer, and two cars.
The steps up to the second floor were a well traveled path for the bedroom furniture. Sometimes Denisa just had to leave the area when the heaviest furniture had to be stood on end to get it up the steps. But she stuck around for the king size mattress, that looked like a huge marshmallow being stuffed into a key hole.
We wish we would have taken more pictures of the finished projects, but we were too busy (and too tired) to think about doing that. The before and after pictures would have been a great touch for this blog entry. So you will just have to imagine a bedroom with 12-inch wide vertical stripes of blue, brown and cream that we covered over with a nice subtle solid gray. It was a great improvement, and it only took 4 coats of paint to cover those dark stripes!
At the end of five days of hard labor, we were glad to have Luke and Jordan settled into their new home in Kansas City. The setting sun illuminated the proud new owners on their front porch. What a beautiful couple!
We love you and Dad so much and are so appreciative of all the work you did with and for us! Can't wait to have you guys spend a night in the (magnificently painted) guest room!
